The Stolen Generation

By Trina Otero

Have you heard of the Stolen Generation? These are the children who were forcibly taken from their families up until the 1970s. In 1869 the Aboriginal Protection Act was put into place in Australia, which “made Victoria the first Colony to enact a comprehensive scheme to regulate the lives of Aboriginal people. This Act gave powers to the Board for the Protection of Aborigines which subsequently developed into an extraordinary level of control of people’s lives including regulation of residence, employment, marriage, social life and other aspects of daily life.”

Because of its inhumane policies, the act was followed by the Aborigines Act of 1910, yet this legislation rewrite did NOT change the fact that it gave the British the right to remove aka STEAL children who were “half-castes” [part Aborigines, part white] and place them in re-education camps. They did this to brainwash the children and eradicate indigenous blood by breeding them out. In layman’s terms, to breed them with white people so that generations down the line there would be no evident indigenous blood.

“Generally by the fifth and invariably by the sixth generation, all native characteristics of the Australian Aborigine are eradicated. The problem of our half-castes will quickly be eliminated by the complete disappearance of the black race, and the swift submergence of their progeny in the white.” – Dr. Cecil Cook, the Northern Territory Protector of Natives, 1930s.

These colonial, ethnocentric laws have deeply affected the indigenous people of Australia, and it is still a fairly recent wound. The Aboriginal communities are still currently working to restore their culture, to heal, and to fight for their rights. I am an ambassador for Lateral Love Australia which is a beautiful organization that was founded by Aborigines and in place for the Aborigines. I encourage you to read the heart-wrenching story of the co-founder, Brian Butler, which you can find through my site: Lateral Love: A Peaceful Revolution to Protect Australian Indigenous Communities.

May the Light guide you.
